Shallow or Limited Breathing During Sleep
In medical terms, shallow or limited breathing while asleep is called hypopnea. Many individuals with obstructive sleep apnea suffer from hypopnea, which can cause excessive sleepiness during the day. Shallow or limited breathing also include cardiovascular issues, depression, forgetfulness, and mood or behavior changes.
Because this symptom often indicates obstructive sleep apnea, a common treatment for this condition is the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP).
Mild hypopnea can often be treated by losing weight, avoiding alcohol or sedatives, and some exercises.
