Causes of Snoring
Snoring can be caused by a wide number of issues. It is a common occurrence that is typically an indicator of other health issues. Some of the possible causes of snoring include:
  • Overly large tissue in the throat and mouth. Tissue size in the mouth, nose, and throat increase with weight gain. This explains why people who are overweight have a higher tendency to snore.
  • Alcohol or sedative use. Sedatives like alcohol cause the tissues in the mouth and throat to relax, which can cause blockages.
  • Sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder which triggers pauses in breathing during sleep. Most people with sleep apnea snore.
  • Obstructed nasal airways. A stuffy nose from allergies or illness can cause snoring because of the extra effort required to draw air into the nose.
Occasionally, pregnant women begin snoring for the first time during their second trimester. This may indicate elevated blood pressure, a dangerous medical condition during pregnancy. Pregnant women who suddenly begin snoring should see a doctor immediately.
